Embracing autumn: all the ways to cosy up your home for the new season!

Summer is over and, at least here in the UK, it wasn’t exactly a postcard summer! We
seemed to have more rainy days than sunny ones, carrying on the cool, wet theme that
started last winter and endured throughout the spring too. But we hope our customers
and followers managed to make the most of the long days and inject some resilient
British spirit into their summer!

Now, autumn has arrived, and we know lots of you will have your fingers crossed for an
‘Indian summer’ with blue skies and crisp sunny days. There’s nothing quite as beautiful
as the contrast between the flaming reds and burnished orange and golden leaves on
trees and scattered on the ground and a vivid blue sky. A walk to a country pub or
around a pretty Cotswold town before heading home to prepare the garden for winter…

But darker evenings and cooler nights are an inevitability as the months go by, so what
can we do to stay warm and cosy in our homes? In this blog we’re sharing some ideas
for how to embrace ‘sweater season’ in your home and create rooms that are
sanctuaries when the weather outside is windy, wet and cold!

Throw on a toasty throw

We can’t stress enough that a throw or blanket is your best friend for these ‘in-between’
seasons, when it might not be cold enough to have the heating fully on, but the nights
get cool, and the mornings are sharp. Layer one on your bed to stave off a chill until it’s
time for a thicker duvet in a higher tog, have one to hand for when you’re curled up on
the sofa – wherever you feel the cold… Those of you who work from home will know that
sitting totally still, even in the middle of the day, can feel chilly, so they work to pop over
your lap when you’re on back-to-back Zooms and calls. From soft merino wool designs
from Brita Sweden to Zinc’s luxurious faux fur throws, we’ve got a huge range to tempt
you into making a blanket your must-have autumnal accessory! Shop the full range of
throws here.

Choose a thicker rug for seating areas

You can create a cocoon in your living rooms or den by selecting a thick rug to place
under your sofa or chairs. Your feet will stay warmer and any pets who like to sit with
you in the evening (if they’re not allowed on the furniture, of course) will appreciate the

snug layer between them and the flooring. We love this soft and shaggy design from
Ligne Pure, perfect for creating a stylish and cosy space.

Bury your toes in a sheepskin rug

We love popping one of these sumptuous Origin sheepskin rugs on the floor next to our
bed. Why? To prevent icy toes when you first hop out of bed in the morning and last
thing at night! You can also add them to an armchair or sofa, drape one across a
kitchen bench or window seat – wherever some extra fluff and warmth will be just the
ticket! We’ve also heard of people who use them to line their office chairs when they’re
working at home – another way to help keep heating costs down when you’re in the
house in the middle of the day.

Stop dirt and raindrops at the door

This one might not be autumn and winter-specific this year, after so much rain, but
interior accessories that you can use all year round are no bad thing! We’re proud to
stock the brilliant Hug Rug mats and runners that will trap mud, dust and water right at
the entrance to your home. Plus, they’re made in the UK, they’re crafted from recycled
cotton, they have a grippy waffle back made from recycled rubber, are machine
washable at 30 degrees and they come in a huge range of fun designs and plain
colours. Who’s grabbing one for each doorway into their house?!
