Our top five interiors trends for 2023
One of our favourite pastimes as the start of a new year approaches is to check out the predicted home and design trends for the next 12 months. Of course, taste and style are both completely subjective, and everyone will interpret trends differently, which is what makes it so much fun! We’ve picked the highlights from a lot of reading and are proud to share our top five interior design trends for 2023 with you.
Mixing up the interior design eras
Some interior design trends point to a very specific period, such as the Georgian era, the 1970s, Victorian aesthetics, but that raises the question – how many times can we reinvent the wheel? This year we can expect to see more people mixing pieces from the past and present, blending their favourite elements from each era, to create a truly personal look. We love how this trend will tap into a more sustainable lifestyle too, with people sourcing furniture and accessories from upcycling businesses, charity shops and boot sales as well as buying brand new! Plus, displaying family heirlooms and hand-me-downs that can be treasured in public rather than hidden away in boxes. If you adore the bold patterns of the Arts and Crafts Movement, don’t forget to take a look at our William Morris collection.
Deep reds are making a comeback
Over the last few years, we’ve seen some rich, darker shades coming into fashion one after another – think deep Scandi blues, emerald greens, rich teals and even the darkest greys adorning walls, kitchen cabinets and bathroom tiles. This year, the dark colours set to make a return to the interior design palette are burgundy and deepest scarlets, rich cabernet reds and darkest purplish pinks. In fact, bold colours in general are set to be big news in 2023, and we can’t wait to see this trend explode on Pinterest and Instagram and how interior enthusiasts embrace it in their homes. If you fancy adding some burgundy into your home, this Brink & Campman rug is a great way to do it!
Sustainability is still key
With ever more focus on climate change and reducing our impact on the planet, sustainability is an home accessories trend which is set to stick around for the long term. That means consumers are on the hunt for stylish designs which are crafted from sustainable, natural materials wherever possible. They’re also on the hunt for designs which will endure for many years to come and quality that will last, so that there’s no need to replace products and throw old items into landfill. Recycled materials, such as the clever material used to make Hug Rug’s Woven’s collection of cushions, throws and rugs, will be in demand, as will real wool, jute and sheepskin.
Could we be waving goodbye to ‘cottagecore’?
We’ve been looking at some of the new trends set to disrupt interior design in 2023, but what are we set to say goodbye to? One of the waning trends is said to be cottagecore, the whimsical and decorative folky interiors which first appeared in the late 2010s. The trend went viral in 2020, when we were stuck at home and hand-painting furniture, picking wildflowers and generally embracing a simpler life suddenly seemed more attractive. Now, it seems most people are keen for a little more zing in their homes, and maximalism and vibrant shades are taking over.
Creating entertaining spaces…
Speaking of the dreaded Covid again, we’re hearing that 2023 is going to be a big year for reimagining our entertaining spaces! Whereas in 2020 (and for some time after) people had to use every spare bit of space to create home offices and home-school their children, this year is set to be all about seeing as much as possible of friends and family. That means reclaiming the dining table, transforming outdoor spaces into alfresco living zones and generally enjoying life as much as possible. We think that sounds like perfection – and we have a huge range of indoor/outdoor rugs which are perfect for zoning your entertaining spaces both inside and the garden!
